By Allan Fox: Amir Khan watched Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) defeated IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-1-1, 15 KOs) tonight by a 12 round majority decision, and Khan immediately said he’ll fight Brook if he’s interested in facing him.
Khan has his doubts that Brook will be eager to face him due to him being a touch match-up for him. Khan believes that Brook will instead choose to take a normal title defense rather than risk his new IBF belt so quickly.
“I think it would be a huge fight. A good mover is going to give Kell problems,” Khan said. “I would be a terrific fight if he fights me. I think it would be massive in England. Let’s have it. I love that fight. I’ll be waiting for a call. I’m thinking he won’t fight me next. I think he’ll want to take another fight first. I’m not saying no to that fight. Let’s get it on. I’m going to sit down with Golden Boy and Al Haymon and see if we can get that fight. If the Kell Brook fight is there for me, why not? He put in a good fight with Porter and proved himself.”
During the same interview, Khan said that his adviser Al Haymon is working on trying to put together a fight for his November bout. Khan said that Robert Guerrero and Devon Alexander are two of the names that they’re looking at for the fight.
With Brook suffering a cut in the fight over his right eye, he likely won’t be ready to fight a challenging opponent like Khan three months from now. That’s probably not going to be enough time for Brook’s cut to fully heal. Besides that, Brook will need to be able to spar before the fight and he’s not going to be able to spar with a cut that’s still healing.
A match-up between Khan and Brook will likely need to wait until next year some time. Khan could wind up facing WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr next May. If that happens, Brook will need to wait until the second half of 2015 for him to possibly meet up with Khan.
That fight would also hinge on Brook not losing his title before then. If Brook faces someone good like WBA interim champion Keith Porter then he could have some problems with him and he might lose. Thurman was in attendance tonight at the Brook-Porter fight.
Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn tends to make a lot of safe fights for his fighters unless they’re taking a big money fight. Hearn likely will have Brook play it safe by fighting a fringe contender next rather than someone good that could potentially beat Brook.
